FRP Rebar is a non-corrosive alternative for steel rebar in concrete reinforcement. It comprises two elements, a fibre and a matrix resin. The fibre used is usually carbon, aramid, basalt, or glass whereas the matrix resin is composed of either polyester, epoxy, or vinyl ester. FRP rebar is a spiral wrapped fiberglass rod which is light in weight and easy to handle as well. Also, it is electrically and thermally non-conductive, efficiently resists heat transfer and possesses greater tensile strength than steel.
FRP Rebars – Characteristic Properties
- Linear – Elastic Behavior up to failure under tensile load
- Ultimate tensile strength, which is twice the yield strength of steel
- 1/4th the weight of steel rebar
- Electromagnetically neutral and thermally non conductive
- Non-corrosive (provides longer life and can be used without any coating in adverse/harsh environment)

- Concrete structures susceptible to corrosion
- Concrete structures which require non ferrous rebars due to thermal non conductivity or electromagnetic consideration
- Where machinery will consume the rebar (Cutting is required, Tunnel – Soft Eye)
- Low Demand Slab Applications (Lower labour cost due to light weight of FRP)
